At the recent ITF Pro Tour 15k at the State Tennis Centre, Crystal qualified and Talia won her first round match to earn their first ITF World Tennis Tour ranking points. It is a big step forward for both girls and we congratulate both girls on a very exciting outcome for both.

And among the very strong field competing at the Gold AMT that followed at Dalkeith, Talia made the final but lost to Maddison Inglis, Daniel made the final against Tristan Schoolkate but had to pull out with injury. Talia and Casey made the doubles semi, as did Alex and Daniel and Casey won the conso.

These are all good results in their own right and we say well done to all :)

And finally, good luck to the large contingent heading to Esperance to play the long weekend Silver OJT/AMT event. It is a Brixton tradition to go to this event and we wish all the best to:

A special congratulations goes out to all who have contributed to Talia and Sehun becoming the number 1 players in Australia in their respective age groups (and younger).

It is a long-term team effort by the players, parents and coaches to reach such a milestone - and we hope and intend to use it as a platform for everyone's greater success.

Very well done Talia and Sehun personally - we are all proud of you and you deserve the accolade.

Talia got a wildcard into the ITF Grade 1 event in Traralgon Victoria and beat the numbers 71, 32, and 9 juniors in the world (under 18s - 4 years out of her age group) to make the quarters! Amazing result Talia! This result won her a singles and doubles wildcard into the Junior Australian Open which has already begun... will update soon.

Ranking Update:

Sehun is now #2 in Australia in his birth year. Keep up the good work mate ;-)

Lots of good things happening at the moment...

Casey and Talia are both competing well at Junior Hopman Cup.

Talia qualified and made the quarterfinals at the Platinum AMT in Ballarat.

Casey came runner-up in the 18s Gold at Ballarat.

Talia came runner-up at the Gold AMT at Mt. Lawley.

Tate and Talia defended their Mixed Doubles title at Mt. Lawley. :-) :-)

Dylan came runner up at Robertson Park and won the doubles there and at Mt Lawley.

Tarik had a win at Mt. Lawley he has never had before, and made the quality-conso final.

Cameron came runner-up in the doubles at Robertson Park and Mt Lawley, won the AMT quali-conso at Mt Lawley after beating a couple players he normally does not beat, and also came 4th in the singles.

Yangho came 3rd at Mt Lawley in singles.

Daniel, Casey and Alex all made singles quarters at Mt Lawley AMT.

Jaun and Dylan made singles quarters at Mt Lawley.

Tara won the 12s conso and came doubles semis with Jaun at Mt Lawley.

Sehun got his first ranking points by winning main draw matches in 12s events at 8 years old.

Many others are showing performance improvements and I'm sure will be getting a mention in coming results blogs...

Daniel is doing a key job keeping everyone's training loads adequate while John and Tate are at tournaments.

Week 3 of December Showdown saw 5 Brixtonators compete in the 12s and 16s Nationals.

In the 12s:

Tara at 10 years old finished 44th in the 12s.

Yangho made the round of 32 and finished 31st overall.

Dylan lost 3 matches then won three matches to finish 56th.

All three players learned valuable lessons about how to win matches at the national level in the coming years.

In the 16s:

Casey made the round of 16 and lost in the conso quarters to finish 14th.

Talia lost to the number 1 seed in the round of 16, then won 4 more matches in the conso to finish 9th.

Well done to all for either gaining direct acceptance or qualifying for this prestigious event. Many coaches nationally complimented the children on their behaviour on and off court and acknowledged the significance of 5 players from one club competing at the Showdown.

...And also, importantly, we would all like to thank Sehun for practising with everyone throughout the week and supporting everyone in their matches! ;-)

Talia adds a second national title to her December Showdown Tour by playing number 1 on the winning WA 14s girls State Team. Talia won 5 of 6 matches in a dominant display. Winning the National Teams Event against all the other States in Australia and 5 international teams including Japan and China is a significant achievement. Excellent job Talia for another fantastic week of tennis.

Yangho's 12s boys team finished 4th in what Yangho describes as a "hard tournament and a great learning experience that I will remember for a long time." Yangho won a clutch singles match in the semi-finals and demonstrated exemplary on-court behaviour throughout the event.

There will be another blog about how all the kids did in the 12s and 16s individual events in a few days.

After a number of outstanding results in previous nationals, Talia has achieved her goal of winning the 14s December Showdown Australian Championships in Melbourne. Talia (and her family and coaches) are very happy with this incredible achievement. Fantastic work Talia!

Tara undefeated at #1 and Stephanie at #3 were on the winning Super 10s team last week. The girls keep up a strong Brixton Super 10s tradition. Great job girls!

Over the same period Crystal and Daniel both made an AMT singles final, an AMT singles semi-final, and Crystal won an AMT doubles title.

Brixton student-athletes have a strong academic tradition. We would like to acknowledge some recent school awards:

Daniel received the SIDE ADF Award for Leadership - nice honour Daniel.

Talia received the Elite Performance Award at Applecross and was awarded 'Top of Her Class' - congratulations Talia.

Zac received the 'Most Improved Player" award at Applecross - great job Zac.

We are proud of all of the Brixton players who achieve high academic standards.

After the success of the Hills Silver event, the Brixton players had a big few weeks at the Claycourt Nationals, ITFs, the Reabold Silver OJT and AMT, and the Gold OJT at the State Tennis Centre:

Talia made the final of the 14s Claycourt Nationals - well done Talia for another outstanding achievement at the national level!Talia also accumulated another 8 ITF World Junior Rankings Points over two ITF events she played in Sydney and Canberra. Talia's world junior ranking is currently 1279 (under 18s).

At Reabold:

Yangho and Dylan came 1st and 2nd in an All-Brixton final in the 12s singles. Big congrats to both for a great result, and especially to Yangho for winning his first Tournament!! Great job Yangho, we are proud of you.Dylan also won the 12s doubles.Crystal won the Women's AMT event in a comeback win in the final! Great job Crystal, it is wonderful to see you in the winner's circle again ;-)Casey and Alex both made the AMT semis. Alex won the doubles.Daniel made the AMT Men's final.

At the State Tennis Centre:

Yangho played some great tennis to make the final of the 12s singles and the semis of the doubles with Rijad.Cameron beat two higher seeds along the way to a 4th finish in singles and made the semis in the doubles.Dylan came 7th in the singles and 2nd in the doubles.Talia and Casey came 1st and 2nd in an All-Brixton final in the 16s singles, and paired up to win the doubles. Great job girls!Jaun came 6th in the 12s singles in her best result in a Gold level event so far.

A number of the Brixton players are currently at best-ever rankings, and there have been some massive improvements over the past few months:

Dylan and Yangho are now the top two ranked players in the 2006 birth year.Jaun is up to #4 in her birth year.Tara, Casey, Talia and Daniel are also #1 in WA in their respective birth years.Jaidon and Zac saw their rankings improve dramatically.Andreas gained a ranking for the first time.

Wet Weather training:

None of the above would have been possible without the dedication of the parents who brought their kids every day in the rain and worked hard squeegeeing courts so that we could maximise on-court time over the winter months. We are certain that this effort has been an integral part of the team's success.

Thanks to everyone who helped make Gavin's going away a memorable experience!

Gavin has taken up a great scholarship offer in the U.S., and we wish him all the very best and want him to know that he will be greatly missed!

As we say goodbye to the Gold Coast, Daniel, Casey and Talia all return to Perth on the 20th having gained ITF junior world rankings in what has been an outstanding tour in QLD. All three scored multiple impressive wins along the way (and a little bit of beach time as well).

Well done all three for a significant achievement!

At home the Brixton Team put in a very solid performance over the 3 partially incomplete holiday tournaments and recorded multiple improved results that included 5 singles semis, 10 singles quarters, 3 doubles wins/or finals, 2 x 12s conso wins (by 10 year olds), and multiple conso finals, semis and quarters.

Great job team and we are looking forward to working on what we learned from our experiences!

In the first ITF event in QLD:

Daniel won three rounds of qualifying (beating two seeded players along the way) and his first round main draw match to make the round of 16.

Casey also qualified (beat the number 2 seed in qualies) but lost a hard fought first round match. Casey won two close doubles matches with Talia and made the quarters.

Talia received a main draw wildcard and won two great matches against older and higher ranked opponents. She lost to the number 1 seed in the quarters, and made the quarters in doubles with Casey as well.

All three will collect some ITF ranking points for their efforts - and were rewarded the next morning with a sunrise, two-hour practice session with their coach to work on how to do even better.

Off to the Gold Coast for ITF #2.

Daniel, Casey and Talia are on the road with Tate in Queensland playing the Rod Laver Gold OJT, the Rod Laver ITF Junior, and the Gold Coast ITF Junior.

The girls have already had an outstanding result in the 18 and under singles of the Rod Laver Gold OJT with Talia and Casey making the final against eachother - with Talia prevailing 7-6 6-1 in a well-spirited final! Talia had two other good wins en route to the final - beating the number one seed Danielle Morris in her first match 6-4 6-4, and and the current 14s national champion Taylah Lawless 7-5 6-1 in her third match. We congratulate the girls on an excellent performance! (They earned an ice-cream for this one.)

Daniel made the doubles semis in another notable result.

Most of the Brixtonators over the past 6 months have been working on their aerobic conditioning with some very positive results:

Daniel, Gavin and Tarik can all run 7kms in less than 28 minutes.

Crystal, Casey, Dylan and Rijad can run 6kms in 30 minutes or less.

Talia can run 6kms in less than 25 minutes.

Gayle and Jaun can run 3kms in less than 15 minutes.

A number of the younger Brixtonators are training towards running 3kms in less 15 minutes.

Good aerobic conditioning is one of the key aspects of being a winning tennis player. Very well done to those who have taken this aspect of hard work seriously and have raised their fitness levels and results accordingly. Keep it going!

After winning doubles titles with multiple partners and making a number of singles semis and finals, Mauhan won the WA Day 12 and under Boys Singles Championship at Burswood this week. He had to endure an tense struggle which saw him win 10-8 in the Match Tiebreak after losing the first set 0-6 and winning the second 6-4. Mauhan also made the doubles final.

Cameron Yurkov also had a a good tournament, beating the number 3 seed in straight sets en route to a third place finish. Well done to Cameron.

Great to see the boys hard work starting to earn results!

Talia and Casey Tay added to an impressive packet of doubles wins in both juniors and open events by winning the Gold AMT at Geraldton at Easter. Other results included Talia making the Women's Singles semi-final and Daniel making the 18s singles final.

Gayle Leong was in the winner's circle at Dalkeith on the same weekend as one of the 12s Doubles Champs.

The Brixtonators were represented in Tennis League Finals wins this season.

Rockingham Tennis Club won 14 Division 2 with Brixtonators Dylan Cleary and Rijad Basic, with friends Aryan Patel and Imran Sehic also on the team.

In addition to our juniors having some success, long time Brixtonator Alex Downey was a full time and instrumental player on the winning Men's State League team for Mosman Park.

Alex Downey won his 4th consecutive Men's Singles event at Esperance as Talia Gibson won her first (at age 13). They both backed up their singles wins taking out the doubles; Alex with Evan Manso and Talia with Brixton teammate Casey Tay.

Talia has won her first AMT womens singles event at 13 years old with great wins along the way; including a high quality, three-set win against Teiwa Casey in the final. Great achievement and big congratulations to Talia!!

Alex and Gavin won the AMT doubles final against Luca and Daniel in an All-Brixton final. Very well done to all four boys on this unusual achievement.

Gayle, Mauhan and Alec Tasovac had personal best results at a Gold event finishing second, third and semis respectively at the Perth Junior Gold event in January.

The tournament followed the Brixton event held at Kalamunda the just prior to the Gold tournament. The Brixtonators who enjoyed some success in the hills included;

Mauhan and Gayle finished 3rd in singles.

Mauhan and Rijad won 12 s doubles.

Gayle and Tara were doubles finalists.

Andreas made the 10 singles semi.

Alec won the 10s conso.

Yuvi won the 12s conso.

Tara made 12s conso final.

Gabby won 14s conso.

Talia won the junior Hopman Cup and as a result won a chance to practice and then play a few games with top 10 player Coco Vandeweghe. Gayle happened onto another star David Goffin while competing in a junior event that was being held concurrent to the Hopman Cup.

Inspired, the girls have moved on to various summer competitions; Talia in South Australia where she has qualified for a Platinum AMT event and Gayle in the local Gold event at Burswood.

Talia Gibson won the State Grass Court 16s and then joined her coach Tate Roberts to add the State Grass Court Mixed Doubles title to a growing list of tournament wins.

Among the other Brixtonators who had a good week at Mt. Lawley;

Mauhan finished 4th in12s singles and won the doubles. Gayle finished 2nd in the 12s singles and the doubles. Alex made the semis in the AMT singles and defeated Daniel and Luca to reach the doubles final. Dan and Luca made the AMT doubles semi beating a highly favored team along the way. Luca won the AMT Conso. Jaun 2nd 10s singles. Andreas won the 10s conso.

Onto Brixton's event at Kalamunda.

Talia and Crystal spent a few weeks on the road with Tate competing at the December Showdown and had some fantastic outcomes.

Playing a year out of her age group, Talia finished 5th in the 14s individual event, made quarters in the doubles, was undefeated at #1 for WA in the Teams event until the final against Japan, and had solid wins against 6 of the other best players in Australia along the way.

Talia also received a wildcard into the 16s event (at 13!) where she had a win against a player in the top 150 in Australia.

We congratulate Talia on what was an exceptional tour.

Playing at least two years out of her age group, Crystal finished 9th at the Victorian Hardcourt Platinum AMT, and 9-12th at the 18s event at the December Showdown - two outstanding achievements for her age and included 5 wins against top 60 opponents, one of which being a straight sets win against the #1 player in Australia in Crystal's age group.

We also congratulate Crystal on two outstanding tournaments.

After a solid year of improvement, Mauhan Dass competed in his first nationals where he won half of his singles matches. This is a noteworthy accomplishment and we say well done to Mauhan on a great first effort at national level.

Onwards to the summer competition period where many Brixtonators are competing thought out the summer. Good luck to all!!

Jaun Yum posted another win at Robertson Park this week winning the 10s singles. Mauhan Dass continued to enjoy improved results making the singles final and winning the doubles with Rijad Basic. Gayle Leong had a good week finishing 3rd in the 12s singles and making the doubles final with Layla Firns.

It is now on to Mt. Lawley where the Brixtonators bring 25 players including intrepid coach Tate Roberts.

Alec Tasovac won 5 matches, winning 20 games losing only 2 on his way to a win in the 8s at the Junior Development Series event at Wembley Downs in early December.

He will be moving into the 10s in the upcoming summer events.

Tara and Milla have been selected to represent West Australia at the National Super 10 event in Melbourne this year. The event is held during the Australian Open and features the best players from each state under 10 years old. It is an exciting event and an opportunity for the girls to see where they stand in their age group in the country. They will meet and establish relationships with girls that they will compete with years into the future.

Brixton Tennis has a proud history with this event having had a player in the event every year since its inception in 2011; we congratulate the girls and thank them for carrying on a tradition.

Milla and Jaun were on the winning Super 10 girls team and Tate coached the winning boys team duplicating the Brixton effort in Super 10 season #1.

Well done girls !! (and Tate).

Congratulations to long time Brixtonator and assistant coach Gavin Tay for earning the Dux award at the School of Isolated and Distance Education. Gavin attends SIDE in the Elite Athlete program and has combined tennis and academics successfully earning not only this award but many offers of financial assistance from universities in the United States on the basis of his combined accomplishments in these areas.

Quoting an official from SIDE; (we are) "so proud of him for his amazing work ethic and outstanding achievements...he has provided an excellent role model not only for other athletes, but also for his classmates".

We can only add that we are also extremely proud of Gavin.

Talia Gibson defeated Lauren Nikoloski, Lily Fairclogh, Abby Gibson and Taylah Preston at the recent Junior Hopman Cup and was the only undefeated player. She led her team (she teamed with Zach Viala) to a big win. Great work Talia

Crystal and Alex continued their recent success in AMT doubles both winning at the recent Bronze AMT at the State Tennis Center with partners Lexie Weir and Evan Manso respectively. Well done Brixtonators!.

Talia Gibson and Casey Tay continued a Brixtonator tradition winning awards at Applecross by taking out "Player of the Year" honors for their respective school year in 2016 - 2017. Well done girls!

Crystal added to her doubles success at the Gold Australian Money Tournament held at Dalkeith Tennis Club this October. In the singles semi final Crystal had a match point against far more experienced Teiwa Casey in the second set but failed to convert and lost in a three set thriller. She recovered composure and won the doubles semi the same day with partner Lexie Weir. They followed that performance with a comprehensive win in the final the following day.

Honorable mention goes to three quarter finalists;

In the women's, Talia Gibson (13YO) put up a valient fight against Madison Inglis who has been ranked in the top 600 in women's world rankings and is still in the top 30 in Australia, going down 6-3, 6-2.

In the men's; Alex Downey carried an injury which saw him play only one two handed backhand in a quarter final loss and Luca Bonini who made perennial AMT champ and 57th ranked Zac Itzstein work hard to defeat him in the other quarter final.

Talia Gibson won the 14s Singles and Doubles at the WA Junior Open backing up her win in the 12s of the same event a year ago taking out the final against Ella Hunt 6-2 , 6-4.

Other notable results...

Casey Tay finished second in the 16s, Gayle Leong 3rd in the 12s, Jaun Yum 3rd in the 10s, Mauhan 5th in the 12s and Imran 7th in the 12s,

Gayle Leong had a day out at Reabold winning the singles final losing only a few games and then backing that up by winning the doubles final as well.

Joining Gayle in the winners circle was Mauhan Dass who won the 12's doubles.

Also performing well was young Jaun who finished 2nd in the 10's singles, Talia who finished 3rd in the 16s and who made the doubles final with Casey.

Alex Downey, Crystal Mildwaters and Talia Gibson enjoyed a successful trip to the Margaret River AMT in September. All three made the semi finals of the singles, including an upset win by Talia over more highly ranked Lexie Weir and they all made doubles finals with Luca Bonini joining Alex in the final. Crystal and Talia went on to win the doubles adding the Gold event here to some other great results the girls have enjoyed in doubles this year. Well done Brixtonators!

Young Brixtonator10 year old Milla Tasovac had her first tournament win at Blue Gum in a Tennis Australia Junior Development Series event over the weekend and Alex Downey won his second consecutive AMT doubles. Congratulations to both!

Brixton's full time squad is back on track with the return of the travelers. All the players have themes they are working on in term 3 and are looking forward to competing over the holidays.

There are a few Bronze AMTs leading up to the next big event which is a Platinum AMT to be held at Margaret River at the end of September. Many of the full time squad and a few of the afternoon squad will travel with Tate to Margaret River this year ...good luck to all!

Crystal Mildwaters continues her good form from Sawtell and again made the quarter finals of the singles at Newcastle.

Crystal then teamed up with Anastasia Berezov to post consecutive upset wins over seeded opposition to win the Ladies doubles. It took two very tight struggles to pick up winners checks;

in the semi final they won 7-6, 6-7 , 10-7 and in the final 7-5 , 3-6 . 10 -8.

Also at Newcastle Luca won two qualie matches; Daniel made the conso semi final defeating an opponent he lost to in Sawtell and Gavin broke through for a win in the conso draw.

Crystal Mildwaters won the 18s at Sawtell fighting off 4 tough challengers in the last two days. Crystal also made the ladies quarter finals in the open AMT to cap off a great event.

Daniel Downey won the Qualie Conso event for the second year in a row.

The group will practice in Sawtell the next two days and then off to Newcastle for the next event.

Talia Gibson is thriving in Europe (but for an annoying head cold); making a doubles final in week one of the tour and yesterday making the round of 16 in singles and the quarter finals in doubles defeating the number 1 seeds in the round of 16 of the second event on the tour.

Crystal, Daniel, Luca and Gavin are now at Sawtell practicing on clay for the Platinum AMT which begins Friday Aug. 4th.

Following up on a relatively successful tour in 2016; four of the full time Brixtonators are off to New South Wales to compete in Platinum Australian Money Tournaments in Sawtell, Newcastle and Woolongong. Touring for longer periods and traveling long distances is all part of the process the players need to experience as they move out of Juniors and start their journey onto the pro tour or to university.

Accompanied by John the players leave August 1 and return August 22nd.
